The word valknute has an uncertain origin, but may be composed of the Old Norse valr, which means "warrior fell in battle", and knot. The name is used for a figure that in Norse times consisted of three intertwined triangles. Such a sign occurs, for example, on tombstones, for example on pictorial stones from Gotland in Sweden, and is therefore associated with death. The knot has thus also been named death knot.
The figure has also been linked to Odin and can be called Odin's Knot, as well as the Heart of the Defeated, the Heart of Vala and the Heart of Rungne, the latter after one of the Jotns that the Norse god Thor fought against in the Edda stories.
